Calling the Quarters and Casting a Circle
When you’re first getting started with spellcasting, it’s a good idea to call the quarters and cast a circle every time. Both these actions help ensure success by providing spiritual protection, improving mental and energetic concentration, and connecting you with divine power. Not to mention, every time you do them, you’ll be building up your spellworking chops, so you’ll be on the fast track to magical virtuosity.
I’ve outlined the way I, personally, like to call the quarters and cast a circle. You might like to start with this and then adapt it as you get to know your own magical preferences.
If you don’t currently have an outdoor area where you can work magic privately (alas, the slightest chance someone might stumble upon us mid-spell can cause us to feel too self-conscious for successful magical work), you’ll want to work magic indoors. (It’s important that you choose a time and place where you will absolutely not be disturbed.) In this case, a round rug about four to six feet in diameter is a great tool to have, particularly when you’re still getting the hang of everything, as it helps you clearly visualize the edge of your magic circle. Otherwise, it can be helpful to mark a similarly sized circle on the floor, using something like scarves, coins, or a spool of ribbon.
Once you’ve created your circle, use a compass (most smartphones have them as a built-in app) to determine the four cardinal points of the circle: north, south, east, and west. Remember your altar items that symbolize the elements (from the exercise at the end of chapter 4)? You’re going to use those to mark the points. At the north, place the item from your altar that symbolizes earth. At the east, place the item that symbolizes air. At the south, place the item that symbolizes fire. And at the west, place the item that symbolizes water. Near each item, place a white or off-white votive, jar candle, or tealight in a holder. (If a four-legged friend will be wandering around, be sure to place the candle in a tall jar or vase in such a way that tails, fur, and whiskers will be safe from fire.) Make sure to have a lighter or matches on your person or inside the circle.
Later in the chapter we’ll be talking about casting the spell itself, but for now just keep in mind that if your spell requires physical ingredients or tools of any kind, you’ll want to make sure to have them inside the circle before calling the quarters.
Here’s how to call the quarters and cast a circle.
Stand comfortably in the center of the circle, facing east. Your spine should be straight in a comfortable way and your legs slightly bent (not locked). Close your eyes and come into the space and the present moment by breathing consciously. Notice when you breathe in and when you breathe out. Allow your breath to naturally deepen as you notice it.
